Hello, Octo enthusiasts! As the summer vibe blazed in July, our teams were busy behind the scenes cooking up some new features and polishing our existing ones. This month’s release is packed with features designed to enhance your Octo experience and make your cloud management smoother than before.

In this update, similar to last month, our team is always developing some things behind the curtain. We still strive to improve performance and introduce innovative solutions that will help empower you, our users, to make cloud cost management an easy and fun task.

July has been a whirlwind of activity here at Octo! We have introduced two new features, which debuted on July 5th in the beta version, along with some nifty enhancements that will surely enhance your Octo experience.

Optimized Recommendations and Execution History

16 types of Recommendation

We have released 16 recommendations to help you effectively optimize your resources. Here's a rundown:

  • Purchase RI: EC2, RDS, Redshift, Opensearch, Elasticache
  • Purchase SP: Compute, EC2 Instance, Sagemaker
  • Rightsizing: EC2, EBS, ECS, Lambda
  • Upgrade: EC2, EBS
  • Migrating to Graviton: EC2
  • Stop or Delete Unnecessary Resources: EC2

And more recommendations are on the way! We are developing additional suggestions for future releases.

Peek Behind the Curtain

Ever wondered why we suggested stopping certain instances? Now you can see the latest cost trends, CPU usage, network traffic, and more on the recommendations details page. Note that evidence data might not be available for all recommendations yet.

Optimization Tracking Made Easy

Keep track of which recommendation you’ve implemented by marking them. View your marked recommendations on the “Optimization History” page to see your cost savings over daily, monthly, or yearly periods. It’s like having a personal finance manager for your cloud costs!

Cost Group Budgeting Bliss

Budgeting just got a lot easier! Set budgets for different expense categories, track their progress in real time, and get alerts when you’re close to hitting your limits. It can be done if a certain percentage or a fixed amount is met.

Budget Progress and Cost Analysis: Graphs Galore

Visualize your actual versus budgeted expenses using sleek graphs. Track your progress, analyze spending, and make adjustments as needed.

Future-Proof Budgeting

Create accurate budgets using historical data and forecasted costs. You can choose between:

  • Distribution: Enter a total budget for the period to be distributed equally each month.
  • Cumulative: You can set your budget for each month.

Save drafts of your budgets and resume them anytime, making the process a breeze.

Hassle-free Budgeting Based on Future Projected Cost

Alert Me, Please!

Set multiple alerts for each budget and receive notifications via Slack, Email, or MS Teams when you hit certain thresholds. Stay in the loop and take timely actions to manage your spending effectively.
Example:
You can receive a  Slack notification when costs reach $5,000 and an email notification when the budget progress reaches 20%. Different notification channels (email, Slack, MS Teams) can be utilized for each alert, providing adaptability in settings. Configuring multiple thresholds allows for a detailed understanding of progress and enables timely action.

We’ve got a whopping eight new recommendations to help you streamline your resources and cut down on unnecessary costs.

Here's what:

Stopping Unnecessary Resources: RDS

Stopping or Deleting Unnecessary Resources (*): EC2, EBS, Elastic IP, ELB

Others (*):

  • Setting bucket lifecycle configurations to delete incomplete multipart uploads
  • Lambda functions with high error rates

(*): Requires a Trusted Advisor subscription.
