Octo Achieves FinOps Certified Platform + Delivers New Features and Cost Innovation

This February has been historic for Octo as we’ve been recognized as a FinOps Certified Platform by the FinOps Foundation, establishing us as the first and only in Japan and Southeast Asia to earn this designation. This recognition is a testament to our unwavering commitment in enhancing cloud cost management and drives our mission to help businesses streamline their costs, enhance accountability, and align cloud spending to their strategic goals.

Not only that, building on this achievement, we’re also proud to introduce new updates that will further empower teams to optimize cloud operations. This month’s new features and enhancements tackle critical FinOps challenges—from cost transparency to resource efficiency—ensuring your organization stays ahead in a dynamic cloud landscape.

February’s Features You Don’t Want to Miss

Aligned with the FinOps Foundation’s framework for collaborative cloud financial management, this month’s updates directly address core pillars like visibility, allocation, governance, and optimization.

These updates are led by the Account Usage Allocation feature.

Account Usage Allocation

Octo’s Account Usage Allocation expands on Fees allocation with a visual builder for more dynamic cost distribution. So, instead of just limiting costs to accounts and cost groups, you can now allocate based on multiple attributes like region, source, and instance type. With flexible operators and custom conditions, this enhancement can make your cloud cost management more precise and efficient.

Smarter Cost Allocation, Greater Control!

Reset Password from the Login Page

Just before heart’s day, we rolled out two new features that reflect our commitment to making cloud management simpler, smarter, and more user-friendly. Whether it’s improving access or fine-tuning cost precision, these updates are designed to make your experience seamless and stress-free.

Now, first, we’ve added a Forgot Password link to the login page to improve user experience. If you can’t remember your password, you can quickly request a reset without having to contact support.

Forgot Password? No Problem!

Unit Cost (Version 4)

Following the Reset Password is Unit Cost Version 4 which brings a more precise and efficient approach to unit cost management, especially for shared resources. Now, shared resource splitting is handled globally, enabling more granular and accurate cost allocation. With the introduction of logic builders, you can easily designate specific resources as shared, providing greater flexibility and control.

We've also refined the user experience by simplifying the design, reducing excessive modal stacking for a smoother workflow. Additionally, unit creation now easily includes unit item creation, streamlining the process for greater efficiency.

Cost Allocation for AWS Savings

Managing cloud costs can be complex, especially with multi-cloud strategies. Organizations often lack visibility into spending and face challenges in manually allocating costs, leading to inefficiencies.

Octo simplifies this with Cost Allocation for AWS Fees, automating the distribution of Reserved Instances (RI) and Savings Plans (SP) savings across accounts and cost groups—ensuring fair and accurate cost sharing.

Now you can share the cost savings from reserved instances (RIs) and savings plans (SPs) across multiple accounts. This means that the savings from one account can be used to offset costs in another, maximizing the benefits of your RI and SP investments.

How does Octo automatically allocate the cost?

Based on the created cost allocator, it will scan the record of RI and SP data. If the savings data on our database meet the criteria on the cost allocator, it will now get the corresponding usage where the savings has been applied. From the usage item, cost allocation will be based on the formula that you have provided. It could be done through percentage or usage ratio allocation.

Effortless Savings Fairly Distributed!

Delete and Upgrade Recommendations

Managing cloud resources efficiently requires timely upgrades and deletions to optimize performance and reduce costs. In addition to Cost Allocation for AWS Savings, Octo now supports six new recommendations to help you streamline your cloud infrastructure.

1️⃣ Terminate EC2 Instance

Permanently deletes an EC2 instance and its associated resources to eliminate costs and free up capacity. This action is irreversible, removing all non-persistent data and related resources.

2️⃣ Rightsize RDS DB Instance Storage

Optimizes RDS storage by resizing volumes, adjusting provisioned IOPS, or changing storage types to balance cost and performance.

3️⃣ Upgrade EC2 Instance

Switches to a newer generation EC2 instance for better performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, ensuring improved CPU, network, and scalability.

4️⃣ Upgrade RDS DB Instance Storage

Enhances RDS storage by transitioning to newer, high-performance storage types (e.g., SSD upgrades) and optimizing size, IOPS, and throughput.

5️⃣ Upgrade RDS DB Instance

Upgrades an RDS DB instance to a newer generation class, improving CPU, memory, and networking for enhanced database performance.

6️⃣ Upgrade EC2 Auto Scaling Group

Updates an Auto Scaling Group (ASG) with newer instance types, ensuring better efficiency, performance, and scalability, while gradually replacing older instances.

These automated recommendations help streamline operations, cut unnecessary costs, and boost performance—making your cloud work better and more efficiently. For more information about these updates, check out  Release Notes: February 20, 2025 to learn more.
